October 9 photo assignment: the Slipway

Whenever we need to feel like we're tourists in a tropical paradise, not a bunch of people struggling to actually live in Africa, we head to the Slipway.  It's a fun weekend excursion to the touristy part of Dar es Salaam called "the Peninsula." Located next to a Hilton Doubletree Hotel, the majority of the visitors are Westerners.  There are a bunch of craft markets where bartering is expected and a fun playground for the kids overlooking the Indian Ocean.  Over-priced outdoor cafes serve tasty slushes and American-esque hamburgers.

There is a little covered marketplace called "the Souk."

Love this painted scene of tropical fish!

Sometimes it feels great to remove ourselves from the daily hustle and bustle of the rest of Dar!
